How to Keep Cats Off Countertops

Some cats have the annoying habit of jumping up on the countertop or table. They may be looking for food or just want a better view of their surroundings. With a little patience, it's possible to train your cat to keep off the countertops.

Instructions

    1

Keep countertops clean; remove food from countertops and wipe up any crumbs. Cats are naturally curious and will jump up on countertops to find out what kind of food there is; they may even take a nibble of it. Keeping your countertops clean will teach your cat that there is no food there and they won't jump on them just to find food.

    2

Tear large sheets of aluminum foil and place on the countertops. When your cat jumps up on the counter, the foil will cause him to slip and slide. As tactile animals, cats don't like the feel of aluminum foil on their feet.

    3

Add water to the aluminum foil to make the surface of the countertop even more uninviting. If your cat jumps on the countertop and gets water on his feet, along with a sliding surface, he will be discouraged from jumping up.

    4

Place double sided tape on the countertops. Place it about 2 inches apart all along the countertop. When your cat jumps up on the counter, he will land on sticky tape. Sticky tape on kitty feet doesn't feel good and will discourage your cat.

    5

Buy noisemakers designed to keep cats off furniture and countertops; some look like upside down mouse traps or jumping frogs. Make your own noisemaker by stringing cans together and attach a trip wire to them. When the cat jumps on the counter and trips the wire, the cans will shake and make noise.

    6

Spray the cat with water from a spray bottle. Every time the cat jumps on the countertop, spray him with water and say "down" firmly. If the cat gets wet every time he jumps on the counter, he's less likely to jump up. How to Stop Cat Peeing? Click Here!. If you keep the spray bottle on the countertop where the cat can see it, the bottle itself will deter him from jumping on countertops.

How to Train Your Cat to Come When You Call

Follow these steps and even your aloof, independent cat will come to you when she hears you say a special word.

Instructions

    1

Talk to your cat - a lot. Encourage her to come to you, and regularly pet her and brush her.

    2

Choose a special dry snack that she has shown she likes. It cannot be her regular dry food.

    3

Pick a special word, such as "snack" or "dessert." It must be a word she will associate only with the special snack.

    4

Use your special word during her next snack time. In her presence, place one piece of the food in her empty dish and say the special word.

    5

Say the word again after she eats the first piece. Place another piece of the food in her dish and say the special word again.

    6

Walk away. If she is giving you "I am really starving" cries, say your word again and give her one more piece. How to Stop Cat Peeing? Click Here!. Then walk out of the room.

    7

Repeat the procedure in 5 minutes. Cats learn very quickly when they are motivated.

    8

Follow this procedure for the next several days.

How to Show a Ragdoll Cat

The Ragdoll breed was first developed in southern California during the 1960's. Owing to their Birman resemblance, Ragdolls have struggled to gain recognition in professional show rings. Breed fanciers have worked diligently in the decades since the breed's emergence to distinguish it from its color point cousins.

Instructions

    1

Check that your Ragdoll is a good example of the breed standard as defined by the Cat Fanciers Association Club (cfainc.org). The standard varies slightly for every color and pattern combination. A Ragdoll's coat is not fully mature until four years of age, so check the standard before each showing for the specifics on your cat's color and pattern.

    2

Register as an exhibitor for shows coming up in your area. You can find information on upcoming Ragdoll shows at cfainc.org. You may also be expected to present proof of your cat's bloodlines to certify that your Ragdoll is indeed a purebred. If your cat places well in local shows, you may be able to advance to regional and national shows.

    3

Get your cat's health certified by your vet 72 hours prior to the start of the show. You will be required to present your health certificate to the show's organizers.

    4

Train your cat for the show ring. Your cat can be disqualified if it shows fear or aggression towards the judge. Work with your Ragdoll from kittenhood to become comfortable with the holds a judge will use.

    5

Groom your Ragdoll for the ring. A bath, blow dry and thorough brushing will present you cat's coat at its most luxurious. Tufts of hair between the toes are acceptable. A Ragdoll's ear should appear rounded, not pointed. If necessary, you may trim ear hair into a rounded shape.

    6

Exhibit your Ragdoll. Cat shows are typically segmented by age. When your category is announced, take your cat to the show ring to be evaluated. How to Stop Cat Peeing? Click Here!. Have a small slicker brush handy to give your kitty's coat a quick fluff before securing it in the ringside kennel.

How to Keep a Cat Out of a Crib

Although most experts agree that it is unlikely that a cat would harm an infant, many parents think it is best to keep a cat out of a baby's crib. Cats are climbing animals with curious dispositions, but with some behavioral modifications, it is possible to make baby's crib off-limits to your cat.

Instructions

    1

Place a piece of plastic carpet runner in the baby's crib, spiky side up. The spikes will discourage the cat from sleeping in the baby's crib.

    2

Install an inexpensive screen door on the door to the baby's room. This way, you can see and hear the baby, but the cat can't get in.

    3

Place netted crib tent over the baby's crib.

    4

Put double-sided tape on a piece of cardboard and put it on the mattress to keep your cats out of the baby's crib. Cats hate anything that sticks to their paws.

    5

Give the cat a scare by placing some empty aluminum cans in the crib. After a few tries, your cat will avoid the baby's crib.

    6

Toss several balloons in the baby's crib. Once the cat pops a few of them with her claws, she won't be coming back for more.

    7

Spray the baby's mattress lightly with a mixture of water and lemon juice, or soak a few cotton balls in lemon juice and place them in the baby's crib. How to Stop Cat Peeing? Click Here!. Cats hate the pungent scent of lemon.

How to Prevent Cats From Digging up Houseplants

Unlike dogs, cats rarely respond to discipline and often couldn't care less about pleasing you. That makes it increasingly difficult to keep them from getting into things you would like them to stay away from-namely, houseplants. Urinating, digging and eating houseplants are an enjoyable past time for many cats, but quite the opposite for those who enjoy their green thumbs. Follow these simple steps to keep your cats from digging up houseplants.

Instructions

    1

Keep your plants in an area that is difficult for cats to reach and get to. Hanging plants is always a great choice.

    2

Use a rock-mulch on the top layer of soil to discourage your cats from digging. The cats enjoy the feel of the soil and using rocks and mulch will quell its appeal.

    3

Spray the plants with a citrus scent. Cats commonly do not like these smells. There are commercially produced sprays such as Bitter Apple or Bitter Orange available at most Pet stores and designed for use on plants. How to Stop Cat Peeing? Click Here!. Or, you can try placing some orange or lemon peels in the soil.

    4

Sprinkle cayenne pepper on the soil. The smell and feel of the pepper will discourage cats from digging in the area or using your houseplants as a litter box.

    5

Add a small amount of Eucalyptus oil to the soil. Cats dislike the smell and will be less likely to dig in the soil.
